Background of the study
This study evaluates how Hausa language is represented in media coverage of political campaigns in Kano. Media representation plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of language and identity. In Kano, political campaigns often use Hausa as a tool to engage local voters, with media outlets framing political messages that highlight linguistic pride and cultural identity (Sani, 2023). The research examines the ways in which television, radio, and digital platforms portray the Hausa language during political events. It analyzes both the linguistic content and the cultural narratives embedded in campaign advertisements, speeches, and interviews. Data is collected through content analysis of political broadcasts and interviews with media professionals and political campaigners. The study seeks to understand whether media representation reinforces traditional language use or promotes linguistic innovation, and how these representations impact voter behavior and political legitimacy. The findings will contribute to our understanding of the role of language in political communication and its broader implications for cultural preservation in Hausa communities.
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of Hausa language in political campaigns, media representations often exhibit biases that can skew public perceptions. Inconsistent use of linguistic standards, oversimplification of cultural elements, and selective reporting have been observed (Sani, 2023). Such practices may undermine the authenticity of the Hausa language and affect the credibility of political messages. This study seeks to identify these issues and evaluate their impact on both political communication and cultural identity in Kano, addressing the gap in research on media influence in political settings.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate media representation of Hausa in political campaigns.
To identify biases and inconsistencies in language usage.
To recommend improvements for equitable language representation.
Research questions:
How is the Hausa language represented in Kano’s political media?
What biases are present in current media portrayals?
How can media representation be improved to support linguistic integrity?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of media on the public perception of the Hausa language within political contexts. The findings will aid media professionals and political strategists in developing more balanced and culturally respectful communication strategies that enhance both political legitimacy and linguistic pride (Sani, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to media representations in Kano political campaigns; excludes non-political media contexts.
Definitions of terms:
Media representation: The portrayal of subjects within news and broadcast media.
Political campaigns: Organized efforts to secure electoral success.
Bias: A systematic distortion in representation.
